The idea for GolfGrouper.com came to me one night as I was dozing off thinking of the round
I was about to play two days later. For me, as well as for others, golf is an escape, a getaway
from work, the hustle and bustle of the city and a great way to get in touch with nature and all
it has to offer. At that point it dawned on me, that there were only two of us playing, leaving
two spots open for others to partake and enjoy.
I knew that all of my close friends were busy but I wanted to ask others with a similar handicap and
skill level if they wanted to form a group. From my perspective, when it comes to golf, the more the merrier.

First Golf Course Designed By Tiger Woods Coming In 2009
Posted on
August 29th, 2008
The new course designed by Tiger Woods, "The Al Ruwaya Golf Course", will be completed in 2009, in Dubai. The offical website can be found here: The Tiger Woods. The website takes you to "The Tiger Woods", which is the name of the complex that includes the course he designed, a magnificent hotel, and residences for sale. The course will be an 18 hole, 7,800 yard, par 72 championship-quality course.
Tiger Woods said: “When I set out to design Al Ruwaya, I wanted the course to reflect what I truly love about golf – a stern mental and physical test that rewards smart thinking. I believe we’ve achieved that goal with a course that will be fun and rewarding for all skill levels to play.” Through a choice of six tees and the careful use of topography, length, width, wind direction, hazard placement and contouring, Woods has created a unique series of holes that will test the mental toughness of a professional as much as his physical stamina, while rewarding only calculated risk taking.

Beat Your Golf Partner With a New Swing!
Posted on
August 21st, 2008
I was browsing a few golf videos and I came upon this one: Stack and Tilt Golf Video. I know there are probably a lot of cheesey gimmick type golf training aids out there, but it seems there are a lot of well known pros using this swing and love it. I found an article explaining this style of swing here: Stack and Tilt Article. Professional golfer Charlie Wii coined the term after being shown the swing by developers Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett. This technique might be worth a try. There is a box set of 4 DVDs that is offered to teach you the stack and tilt golf swing. You can purchase it from our Golf Store. Just search for "stack and tilt" in our "Golf Training Aids" category.

Ryder Cup 2008 / Your New Blackberry Golf Caddy
Posted on
August 14th, 2008
The Ryder Cup 2008 is quickly approaching, scheduled September 16-21. It will take place at Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Now that the PGA Championship is over, the final points have been tallied for the USA team. You can view the allocated points here: USA Ryder Cup Standings and here: US 2008 Ryder Cup Ranking System to see how the points are calculated for the US, as this was recently changed. For the US team, 8 players are chosen based on these points, and the team captain, Paul Azinger, chooses the last 4 to make up the 12 man team. For Europe, 5 players qualify through the Ryder Cup World Points List, based on World Ranking points accumulated from all world ranked tournaments over a 12 month period. 5 Players qualify through The Ryder Cup European Points List, based on the amount of money won in European Tour Order of Merit tournaments. The standings can be viewed here: Europe 2008 Ryder Cup Standings. The remaining two players are chosen by Euro Captain Nick Faldo. The first 8 players of the USA team have been chosen with the conclusion of the PGA Championship. Azinger is scheduled to pick the remaining 4 on September 2.
The Euro points should be tallied by August.31.
For those of you that have a Blackberry, this maybe a perfect tool to help with your golf game. It is called "GreenFinder". It allows Blackberry users that have a model with a built in GPS receiver to determine how far away the front, centre and back of the green are from your current position. You can read an article about it here: GreenFinder. I thought one of the co-founders had a good point: "It occurred to me that's crazy," Semkowski said. "Being a technology guy, I began to look at all the guys who have Blackberrys - a lot of people carry them on the golf course. I took a second look at all the people talking about SkyCaddies. It made no sense to me that people are paying $300-$400 to buy the device when the Blackberry they own already has the capability in it." The new Blackberry Bold, (with GPS), already released in some countries, should be out in North America within the next few weeks. I plan on picking one up when it comes out, and for the courses that don't have carts with GPS, GreenFinder seems like a great idea.

Golf in the Olympics?
Posted on
August 8th, 2008
A question many have asked for years. Should golf be in the summer Olympic games program? The 2008 Summer Olympic games in Beijing, China commenced with the opening ceremony today.
As the 2008 PGA Championship is underway, it brings light to the issue of no golf in the Olympics. It was considered an Olympic game in both the 1900 and 1904 summer games. It featured both men and women individual competitions as well as a men's team. The International Golf Federation is talking about including it in the 2016 summer games. If this is the case some questions you and us at GolfGrouper would be asking are: How would the scheduling work for this around our regular golf tournaments? How would the competitions be presented? Would it just be stroke play, or would there be team competitions? It would be nice to see the 4 best from each country compete in a best ball tournament, or even just teams of 2. Would the top golf players compete for their country? Golf has other major tournaments that players dream of winning such as the Masters. So would winning a gold medal be the ultimate? I think winning a major golf tournament once a year is definately a challenge, but how about the one that only comes once every 4 years? Imagine the nerves a player would need for a tournament like this. I also think that a golf tournament in the Olympics would have major coverage and have a much larger audience than even the Masters. Even if you weren't a golf fan before, cheering for your country would sure give you motivation and excitement to watch it. Tennis is an Olympic sport that has major tournaments every year, why not golf? Let us know your thoughts on this subject!
Thanks
